Do UV Lights Kill Mold, Bacteria and Viruses?
UV lights are used for germicidal use in hospitals, restaurants and grocery stores. And they have been shown effective in killing sterilizing an HVAC system.
Ultraviolet lights were shown to kill mold, viruses and bacteria more than 100 years ago. In fact, in 1903, Niels Finsen was given the Noble Prize in Medicine for using UV to effectively treat patients with skin infections.
Because the coil is used to condense moisture from the air to dehumidify your home during AC cycles. As air passes over the coil, dirt, pet dander and other debris stick to its wet surface. The combination creates an ideal setting for the growth of mold and bacteria that can be spread through your home in the passing air.
Coil UV lights are the most common HVAC sterilizing lights. Coil sterilization lights are installed where they can shine directly onto the surface of the coil, and they are left on continuously.
While often a misunderstood technology that homeowners rarely know is an option, UV lighting works to prevent microbial buildup on air filters, cooling coils, drain pans, and duct surfaces, keeping your entire HVAC system working like new.
As such, UV lighting reduces contaminants that could otherwise build up in your system’s ductwork and cause your HVAC system to work harder just to keep up. By eliminating contaminants, biofilm growth, and other organic materials inside your HVAC system, heat exchange and airflow are both dramatically improved.
Where Can You Install UV Lights in Your HVAC Unit?
We can help to decide the best and most effective place to install UV lights in your HVAC system. Ideally, there are two places in your unit you can install them:
Coil UV Lights—Located on The Indoor Coil
Central air conditioning systems have indoor air handling units in which a coil is located. This can often be a breeding for mold because condensation usually collects on the coil. You can install the lights right above the coil, so UV lights shine on it continuously to prevent the growth of mold.
Ductwork UV Lights or Air Germicidal HVAC lights are meant to kill airborne allergens and pollutants making their way through your return vents. These lights are wired into the system and coordinated with the blower motor, which means they turn on and off with it. These lights are on the costlier side.
